Listener Mail
AMS – Advanced Modeller’s Syndrome
Tony Jacobs talks about our reluctance to try new things.

It used to be that we could try and fail in the privacy and secrecy of our own hobby rooms but with social media the benefits of trying and failing have become something some of us don’t seem willing to do. I looked at a couple of my builds over the last 10-20 years and realized that even just on the subject of weathering, my skills have evolved hugely. I’ve attached some pics numbered in chronological order to illustrate what I mean.

The Tiger was the first time I tried ‘weathering armour’. It’s got a toy-like uniform paint finish, near rusted-through tracks, and weird yellow ‘dust’. Through a succession of trial and error learning with pigments, washes, paint finish variation and lots of other experiments I went from that through Stügs with ‘designer mud’; to Shermans with improving paint, dirt and mud but strangely perfect markings (and figures with that ‘1000 yard stare’… I still hate figures); to Matildas where it’s starting to come together; to my one and only show medal winner… the Uboat.

The Matilda or the Uboat would never have happened if I hadn’t first produced the weird Tiger. But not trying new ideas that might result in weird tigers means that people will never improve their skills. My first piece of advice when I’m asked about things like weathering is ‘just try it out’. It’s the start of a never ending process of learning, of ever improving builds, and a whole lot of fu.

TOPIC
Interview with Mike Baskette

So I offer that if you think the story of a modeller who was quite fully invested for a long time, then nearly fully out for a while, and now clawing back might interest your listeners, drop me a reply. I would be glad to tell you more about the good and bad of how I have gotten to where I am presently. Possibly others are in a similar place.

1) Dragon Sturm Infantry Geschutz 33… This is the last model I have completed probably 10 years ago. Still finished in an “old school” style that I was no longer satisfied with as the hobby was changing in this regard
2) Heavily modified and rebuild Alan Models SU-76M… Lots of scratch work to lift such a dog to this level. This model took “Best Russian” at the 2002 AMPS National Con. and narrowly missed “Best of Show”. The model that did take the top prize that year is worthy of discussion around how the hobby was changing
3) Tamiya StuG III converted from Ausf G to Ausf F/8… This is the old, original Tamiya StuG, not the mid 90’s new tool. Lots of scratch building, parts from the Schmidt Vac-U-Form conversion, aftermarket wheels and sprockets. Same “old school” finish
4) MiniArt Zis-2 Anti-tank gun… Construction is finished for about 3 years now, yet no paint. It is slated to be primed and painted soon.
5)Vintage gaming miniature… I started painting these again a year or so back. I needed something that was just for me and not public consumption, shows, etc. This is where Kim Taylor’s interview really resonated with me
6-9) HO Scale Caboose… I was also deeply into HO railroad modelling. This 90% finished model is prototype specific for the Clinchfield Railroad. Only the roof sections and floor are from a kit. The rest is scratch and resin parts from the masters and molds shown in the balance of the photos. For a few years, I operated a cottage industry contracting custom car runs and decals specific to this railroad.
10) My venerable and well-traveled workbench. Build by my late grandfather in 1989. 1000s of hours spent seated at this thing over the last 30 years. Hoping for 30+ more.

Scale Model Podcast Ep 6. – Goodman Models

Welcome to Episode 6 of the Scale Model Podcast.

In this podcast, I aim to entertain, inform, and hopefully promote the hobby of scale model kit building, with interviews, reviews and news about the scale model hobby.

Our guest today is Anthony Goodman from Goodman Models

Anthony has been interested in models as far back as I can remember. His Dad is an HO scale model railroader and I caught the bug from him. Many Saturday mornings were spent at Niagara Central Hobbies during his early and teen years! He is a model maker interested in all sorts of vehicles – He loves Japanese sci-fi Animation from when he was a kid –  especially Macross, Robotech, Gundam, but he does enjoy all subjects – from armor to aircraft!

Anthony is really interested in delving deeply into techniques and tools from the model building hobby from the past masters right up to today’s cutting edge. He got involved with creating the Super Sanding Blocks as a way to finance his hobby passion and it proved to be a rich experience. For him, using tools to make tools and models really drives his passion and the enjoyment of scale modeling.
