Topic

Changes in modelling over the years and the impact social media has had on styles, techniques and even subject matter – the rise of non-historic subjects (eg: film and TV models, sci fi, anime, etc.) and what the future holds.

My guess – WW1 and 2 subjects become more niche as truly historical in nature and entertainment subjects increase as modellers age out.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart – CF21 is complete.  Working on some battle mechs as as well as the first of two Ornithopters from the latest Dune movie.  Meng made a kit similar in quality to the Bandai micro Star Wars kits.  The first one I built in a landed configuration. I should have added nose weight to it, but it’s going on a base so I can glue it down. I think the scale is around 1/200

Geoff – finishing off the Zeppelin vs Pterodactyls project, which has been fast and fun.  I also put two articles together for IPMS Canada –  on the Zeppelin project and my 1/32 Revell Lysander target tug.  Now I’m back at the Moebius 1/144 Discovery from 2001 which is the subject of another long delayed article.  My guilt at the delay finally forced me to get at it!

Terry – Moving along with the XP-47H.  Looking good under some paint, so I am cautiously optimistic.  The Haseagawa Regult is looking good under some paint as well.

WHAT WE ARE READING

Geoff – Finished Bravo Three Zero by Des Powell – a good book about SAS operations in Desert Storm.

Stuart – The Year Without Summer:1816 and the Volcano That Darkened the World and Changed History

Terry – Finished Handmade. Very interesting, and more about how she interacts with the materials while making all these items, it’s a very personal book.  Still reading the same other books as before, but deciding what to dive into next.

Terry correction: last episode I mentioned Macross started in the late 80s. The series storyline begins in 1999 when the alien ship crashed on Earth, and the first episode is ten years later, when the Zendradi show up.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart – YF-21 painted up. Decals are going on.  Looking really good now. Going to be called the CF-21 Peregrine.
Moosaroo Cup needs to have pictures done this week.

Geoff – Wayward Zeppelin LZ77 is cruising above an uncharted tropical volcanic island near Iceland after being blown WAY off course during a raid in 1916.  Harassed by Pteradons, their accompanying (don’t ask how they got there!) Fokker DR1 Triplanes cannot protect the doomed ship!  Dinos and DR1’s are coming this week from fellow club modeller Ron, but it’s really coming along nicely – even with the required PE work!

Terry – Not a lot of time while I was traveling for business, at our plant so just a single hotel but still, not a ton of time.  Big dinners are awful.  On the plus side the Steam Deck is great for travel time.  I did get some work done on a few projects, the P-47H is coming along, and I brought the 1/48 Jeep which comes with the Tamiya P-47M kit to the club meeting which was fun to work on. Getting the paint touched up a bit on the Regult so I can mask off grey areas.

WHAT WE ARE READING

Stuart – The Year Without Summer:1816 and the Volcano That Darkened the World and Changed History

Geoff – Mostly online stuff about Zeppelins…. And plowing through a collection of Scale Model magazines going back to the 1970’s!

Terry – Started reading Anna Ploszajski’s Handmade: A Scientist’s Search for Meaning.  She is a materials scientist who has chosen a number of materials and objects to describe while making things in workshops, like iron, glass, plastic, brass etc.  Very interesting and I’ve been interested in materials science

I started reading the graphic novel omnibus of Fritz Lieber’s Fafhrd and the Grey Mouser, which I think I signed up for via Kickstarter?  This is a major influence on fantasy to come – like Elric etc.

Hey guys!

I wanted to say that I really enjoyed the show. I’ve been listening since last year and enjoy the topics and discussions.

I did want to ask a question. I too am a big fan of the Robotech/Macross series and especially the aircraft. I’ve heard that you guys get extras for your kits and wanted to know where you got them.

I’ve been reading the books that the show “The Expanse” was made from and really love them.

 Thanks for the great show!

 Mike Gordy

Hi Stuart and gang,

Just a quick line to say how much I’ve enjoyed listening to your podcast.  It’s just like eavesdropping on a couple of buddies discussing their favourite builds and really keeps me entertained!

Given that it’s almost time for the Moosaroo Cup again (Go Stuart!) I thought I’d attach a couple of pics that I took while attending the original contest at the Warplane Heritage Museum, between Anthony and the “Podfather” David Goldfinch.

Please keep up the great work!

Kevin White

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart – Slow and steady work on the YF-21.  The main fuselage section is now together.  Working on landing gear detailing.

I finished inserting some new shelves into a rack we had so now I have more storage space for paints.  I’ve been getting a lot more of the dropper-style bottles from AK and Army Painter and I did not have a good way to store them. For my Tamiya and Aqueous bottles I have drawers that fit them perfectly but they were too small for the dropper bottles.

Geoff – On the final details and weathering on the 1/48 Lindberg Snark so I pulled a “shelf of doom” stalled build-out: the ancient (1959) Revell Bomarc Missile and launch stand (2016 reissue with new decals) and got that one to the “details and weathering” stage. Finally, a Facebook post showing a poster of a Zeppelin battling pterodons dragged me into starting a diorama with the 1/350 Takom Class P Zeppelin over some lost volcanic island – lots of new (to me) techniques involved in simulating torn fabric and interior structure.

Terry – Good progress on the Halberd Models XP-47H conversion.  I’m up to the point of putting some Neutral Grey on the underside, and seeing how I did.  That magic color stage makes it look great.  I also used that color to check all the other seams.  It feels good to make good progress on a couple straightforward projects.

Hasegawa Regult got some dark grey to check seams and do some preshading.  I have yet to check those seams.

***************************************
WHAT WE ARE READING

Geoff – Finished “The Wager” – very good!  Now on to “The Dawn of Everything: A New History of Humanity” by David Graeber and David Wengrow – a rethink of what we think we know about the origins of human societies.  Intellectually challenging and well written.  Basically, Rousseau (noble savage) and Hobbes (man is by nature selfish) are the two competing theories of the formation of human society, and both are wrong.

Stuart – Coming of Age in the Milky Way by Timothy Ferris. – Almost done.

Clear Thinking: Turning Ordinary Moments into Extraordinary Results – Shane Parrish

Terry – Not as much time for lunchtime reading.  I’ll probably start Adam Savage’s book next.  I’m still reading the second Elric book and have been reading the 2013-2015 Constantine graphic novels at bedtime.
