WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart – With the model show planning and life, no time for bench work this week.

Geoff – two windstorms in London impacted our neighbourhood, resulting in changes in our lives and one chainsaw accident…

As a tie in to the books I’ve been reading I worked on repairing a couple of dinosaur skeletons originally built by Steve Harvey, who passed away last year.

A year ago I built a 1/48 Monogram DC-3 for my brother, who had just become a grandfather and wanted a “bush plane/rescue thing” to hang from the ceiling of his cottage.  A fellow club member made custom decals for “Nana and Pops Rescue Service”, with a logo I designed of a bare bum passing explosive gas.  It was flown by my brother’s nom de plume, “Rocco Flamefart”…. Anyway, he wants more vehicles for the “fleet”, so I am now building a Heller 1/72 DC6B in N&P markings!

I also have been working on the old Hobbycraft 1/28 Fokker DR1.  Not bad and satisfyingly substantial!

Terry – I can see the bench again!  I’m getting close to getting back on the bench itself.  As far as building goes, not much new. Still the same mechs and some base coat on the two Reaper dragons.

WHAT WE ARE READING

Stuart The Notebook by Roland Allen

Geoff – my wife and I did the dinosaur road tour of Alberta last month and I read The Rise and Fall Of the Dinosaurs by Steve Brusatte, and The Burgess Shale by Coppold and Powell. Good reads.

Terry Ed Yong’s I Contain Multitudes.  About microorganisms, specifically our micro biome.  A very good read, so far.  Catching up on the My Happy Marriage light novels.

We want to hear from you! Let us know if you have any comments or suggestions scalemodelpodcast@gmail.com

I just finished listening to Anthony’s interview with Rob Booth concerning the future of the IPMS and I wanted to write in to say thank you.

I am exclusively a Sci-Fi modeler. Thanks to Dave over at the PMM podcast I am also a member of IPMS/USA but it’s only because I feel an obligation to support the hobby in general. There is honestly not much for me in IPMS currently, and I’m not very engaged in the organization. However, thanks to Anthony’s interview with Rob, I decided to vote on the new amendments to the constitution and by-laws, in the interest of inclusivity. I imagine there are a lot of people out there like me who would love for IPMS to promote and support their niche of this fantastic hobby but who are apathetic to the current iteration of the organization.

One issue I would have loved to hear addressed in that interview is the chicken and egg problem of new contest categories. Rob said that they track the level of participation in each of their categories and try to respond with new categories and modifications to existing ones where necessary. My question then is: why would modelers enter sci-fi / gundam / other “niche” models into IPMS contests if there are no categories that properly value their contest entries? And if IPMS is waiting until they see significant levels of participation in those niches to create sensible contest categories… well, you see the problem.

If IPMS wants to truly be seen as inclusive it needs to proactively court modelers in areas of the hobby that it has traditionally overlooked by reaching out to those communities and working directly with them to establish new contest categories and other opportunities within IPMS. If you want something, you have to go after it. You can’t wait for it to come to you.

Just my 2 cents.

Keep up the great podcast,

Gino

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH
Stuart – Work continues on the 2023 Moosaroo build, the 1/72 Ural truck, I’ve got more of an idea of what I want to do for a diorama for it.  I think as building continues it will become more clear. I also primed the tires.

Geoff – Spent the whole time sorting through a ton of magazines, books and paints I received from a retiring modeller.  I did splash some paint on the very odd experimental British WW2 “fighter” whose name I cannot recall again.

WHAT’S ON THE BENCH

Stuart – Still slow but steady progress on the Beaufighter and mechs.

Geoff – Finished the two 1/18 scale jets for the London Jet Aircraft Museum, but couldn’t deliver them because illness intervened.  Also finished the Arma Hobbies 1/72 P51B Mustang for the Moosearoo Cup.  All three were “obligation builds”, so it will be nice to settle down to the bench with something from my stash for a change!

Geoff builds a Gundam!

Anthony – Slowly beating my way through my stalled out guilt-inducing projects! Putting decals on my 1/144th EYE-Zak in Titans Test Team livery, which was a major conversion project that I started only years before they released a new tool kit!
