The 2020 Scale Modelling Survey
https://scalemodelpodcast.com/2020survey

Several years ago Jon Bius did a modelling survey in which the modelling community responded in a big way.  This survey provided some interesting insights into the scale modelling community.

It’s time for another survey with some expanded questions.  I have reached out to Jon and with his permission, I have used his original questions and thanks to several other contributors including the On The Bench and Plastic Model Mojo podcasts we have added several more which we know will be interesting to members of our hobby.

The survey is via Google Forms and is anonymous.  It will be available until the end of August 2020.  The results when compiled will be available to all.

Link to 2020 Modelling Survey

Please share far and wide as we would like to get as large a cross-section of modeller’s as possible.

The Survey closes Sept 30th.

Hi there Stuart. I have encountered your podcast a little while ago and have caught up on your most recent recordings. Very enjoyable and informative.

I’ve been a builder of models for a long time but in different ways. I started about 50 years ago with simple models. I focused on WWII aircraft early on. I also did rockets with Estes and Centuri kits.I then got into racing 10th scale R/C cars. Even became sponsored. We traveled a bit to different races, brought home trophies and some great stories. I also became interested in High Power Rocketry. This can be the big stuff. I’ve included a picture of my most recent build, an Astrobee-D, just under 6 feet tall. I’m licensed for Level 1, so I can purchase engines up to “I”. I’ve flown a “J” motor but didn’t take the test for Level 2. If you are familiar with the small engines A, B, C, etc… Each letter up is double the thrust. So you can see once you get to J, it’s a big motor. Recently I’ve been back into plastic, just finishing the monster C57-D Cruiser from the movie Forbidden Planet. I included some shots of that one. Like you have said, “where are you gonna put this thing?” Well, I made a little shelf and have it up over my head.

Enough about me. Like I mentioned, love your show.

One thing. You seem to mix up the name of the ship with the name of the man. The ship is Yamato but the man is Yamamoto. Only because I’m a huge WWII reader and it makes me wince when you say the ship instead of the man who was shot down by P-38s.

Be well!

Hi Stuart and Anthony,

Thanks for bringing up the dedicated model room issue in your podcast. While not ideal it did get me thinking and I added some shelving next to my kitchen table. Not ideal but better. I was sorry to hear Anthony was stepping back from the podcast but not bowing out completely. Very understandable when you have a young family. I’m looking forward to the rotation of interviews and guest modellers on future podcasts!

Cheers,

Tim

From Brandon
I was listening to the Scale Model Podcast while building Meng’s P-51 in 1/48 scale when I heard you haven’t built one yet.

First, I’ll say the Meng offering is fantastic just because of the high surface detail and requiring almost no glue to assemble. I’m sure Eduard’s is even better.

Second, you should check out Leading Edge Decals. They have 2 Canadian P-51 sets with one that has the London, Ontario squadron markings. http://lemdecal.com/P-51%20Mustang%20RCAF%2048.81.html

Personally I’ve got the west coast decal set (Calgary, Vancouver, New Westminster, Edmonton) and 2 mustang kits. Really excited to have these as a paired display.

Cheers,
Brandon
