Prize: Baby Space Crab 1/48 Scale Resin Kit from Moscato Hobby Models
Second Prize Added!! 1/24 Aoshima Lamborghini Aventador
Our Judge is Terry Miesle of Terry’s Trade Secrets!
Results:
Here are the winners as judged by Terry.
Winners and notable entries in two categories. I split them into two categories and split the prizes for those categories. The Execution will get the Baby Crab and the Wow will get the Lamborghini. The execution of concept is judged by how well the modeller brought a concept to life. Wow is simply how impressive the model was on the screen.
Execution of Concept:
Brian McGinnis – 1/48 Fokker DR.1 Good build and figures in a vignette, nicely done all around.
Will S. – 1/100 Gundam Barbatos Great work with posing and very subtle lighting.
Winner of the MHM Baby Space Crab: Andrew Hilton-Wigg – 1/100 Gundam RX-78-2S Desert scheme on the typically colourful RX-78. Subtle shading and appropriate weathering. This is a concept well-realized and looks great.
Wow, that’s Impressive: Rodolfo Rupoli – Kalamity Gorilla mech Cool to see a Kalamity product, and this is probably the best paint and weathering in the contest. Grime and weathering is very convincing.
Al Quint. – 1/18 Hydro-Vee powerboat Great subject, very clean work. More convincing painting on the interior would put this on the trophy table.
Michael Canella – 1/220 Gundam Teifsturmer Deep Striker Wow, that’s one hell of a night light. Looks like an excellent build and very well lit. The photography is spot-on for exposure showing the bright lights but mostly not overexposing the subject.
Winner of the 1/24 Aoshima Lamborghini Aventador Rick Reinert – 1/32 Roland Impressive work, rigging looks fantastic, the color tones for the wood, leather and engine are great. Lozenge decals and details like turnbuckles for rigging are excellent work.
Here are the rest of the entries.

Dewoitine D.520 / 1:48 / Tamiya, with Eduard photoetch set.
The D.520 is the best looking aircraft ever produced, period. Clean lines, and a nice three-colour camo scheme with desaturated browns and greens and cool greys. They even went so far as to make the cockpit a beautiful blue colour.
Assembly went well, aside from some minor issues. Camo was applied mostly freehand with an airbrush. Decals were a dumpster fire of frustration, so I removed all but the small ones and repainted the markings. Stripes, arrows and roundels were masked and airbrushed; numbers were freehand painted. All done with acrylics, except for an oil wash in the panel lines.

This is an RAAF F-111C 'Pig' built in 1/48 scale from the Hobby Boss kit. A very big aircraft... it's actually longer than a Lancaster... it was a lot to take on with a competition deadline. While not displayed, the nosecone has been hinged to allow display of the radar bay (still to be finished). The kit is good although some modification is needed to truly represent an RAAF aircraft. The nose art appeared briefly on A8-127 in the late 80's and it was the 2 available photographs which inspired the build and required hand-cutting paint stencils.

This is the Polar Lights USS Enterprise (Discovery version) in 1/2500 scale. It was painted with MMP paints except for the clear parts which were painted on the insides only with Tamiya acrylics. Most details on the kit are done by means of decals, so almost the whole model is covered in them. Finished with Tamiya gloss.

Mini-Dougram
1/72 scale
Base kits: Moderoid USMC Exoframe (Good Smile), Bromry JRS Native Dancer (Max Factory), Senua.STL (Baphominiatures).
This is the Dougram, re-imagined as a smaller (~9 cm tall) mecha with modern AFV design cues. I converted the base kit by altering the legs, weapons, sensors, backpack, and other parts to reflect the original Dougram’s layout (aside from the digitigrade legs, which I just think look cool). I rebuilt the torso to accommodate a scratchbuilt 1/72 cockpit with LED lighting. Painted with Reaper and Vallejo acrylics, weathered with Vallejo washes and pigments, Mig oils, Citadel glazes, and Crayola colored pencils.

RX-78-2S Earth Federation Space Force Sarah Unit
Bandai Mastergrade 1/100 RX-78-2 Version 3.0 kit. -> changed into the RX-78-2S (Sahara) with Desert Camo(ish - Chrome isn’t very camo but there’s a reason for that below!)
The build is an out of box build with custom decals I designed for it. The colour scheme was inspired by the work of Syd Mead (Many of his paintings take place in desert landscapes and make use of a lot of chrome)
It’s been painted for desert operations with with a sand/brown palette. It was done using Scale 75 acrylic paints for the sand/brown and chipping. The chrome was done with Molotow chrome ink. The panel lining and filter work was done with an AK Weathering pencil applied via a paintbrush. The eyes were hand-painted with Acrylic paints. Dust/sand weathering was done with a mix of Mig/Vallejo pigment, and Mig enamel dust weathering.

1:48 Eduard Fokker Dr.I ProfiPak
I call this another safe landing. Plane is painted to be Manfred von Richtoften's, the Red Baron, iconic plane about a month before he was shot down. Added 3rd party figures, of Manfred, another pilot, and a mechanic greeting him upon his return. Figures are from PZ and CMK. All painted in acrylic, plane was airbrush and brush painted. Figures were brush painted. Decals and PE from the kit were used. The ground was made to represent the worn down areas where planes have rolled over many times.

The model is a 32nd scale Wing Nut Wings Roland D VIb.
I used Aviattic lozenge decals to provide a better fabric feel. I also used gas patch buckles and copper wiring to attach the buckles to the wings. E-Z-Line was used for all riggings and control lines. I also used HGW seatbelts. Otherwise built out of the box. Control line buckles are attached just using e-z-line. Built-in late July into August 2020.
